When Is a Necktie Too Formal?
I always wear a tie whenever I wear a suit, but I’ve seen guys wearing matched suits (not just jackets) with open collars and sometimes even the shirt untucked. Am I doing something wrong? When should I be taking the tie off?

A matched suit with no tie and the shirt untucked is definitely what I’d call a “fashionplate look” — you might see it advertising suits in a glamor magazine, but it’s not really a good look for any actual social or professional situations, apart from maybe a rock concert.
Where you might sometimes see a suit with no ties is at a bar or restaurant after “normal” working hours — usually 5:00 PM, most places. It’s traditional to take your ties off after 5:00, so the business suit with the open collar is sort of a staple look for men stopping on their way home.
There are also casual suits meant for pleasure wear, not business, and these might sometimes be worn without a tie, but in general I’d say that you should go for a sports jacket and odd trousers if you want to skip the necktie.

LikeDislikeKnowing when to ditch the tie is definitely a useful skill! We did a video on it for the Real Men Real Style YouTube channel:
