I’ve been considering a black suit, but I’m not sure what outfits to wear it with. Is it only good for formal situations?

In general you can wear a black suit the same way you would a charcoal gray or dark navy one. It’s business dress, goes well with a white shirt and tie, and is suitable for pretty much any level of formality short of formal (black tie) occasions. It also works as a non-tuxedo option for “black tie optional” invitations.
Worth considering: it looks a little stark and isn’t as versatile as the more neutral charcoal gray. Since a suit is expensive and the two fill the same role, you’re usually better off buying charcoal unless you already have one and are looking for variety. Pale-skinned men also look worse in pure black, especially under fluorescent lighting.
