What Do I Wear in Cold Climates, if I’m Coming from the Tropics?
I live on a tropical island, so I never need more than more than a light shirt and trousers. I’m taking a trip to a place where the temperatures are regularly down around 6 C (43 F). What can I wear to stay warm that won’t break my bank?

Well, it sounds like you’re still going to be above freezing, so don’t panic — it won’t be tropical, but you’re not going anywhere THAT cold. That’s a balmy spring day where I’m from.
If you own a wool suit or jacket, that’s a good default outfit. It’ll cover your body in nice warm fabric. Even tropical weight wools hold heat in better than similar weights of cotton.
To really hold in heat try to keep as much skin as possible covered. Wear gloves, a scarf, and a hat so that only your face is exposed. That’ll keep you from losing a lot of heat, and it’s cheaper than buying a winter coat that you’ll never need apart from this trip!
A long-sleeved undershirt and a heavier dress shirt will also help you here, as will long underwear. Just having two layers instead of one, even if they’re thin layers, makes a lot of difference. And again, undershirts and underwear — a lot cheaper than winter outdoors gear.
Finally, depending on where you’re traveling to and where you’re coming from, be aware that it may be cheaper to buy most of your cold-weather clothes after arrival. Put together one outfit that’ll get you from the airport to a department store without freezing and then fill your suitcase there. If you’re traveling with currency rates in your favor, this can be a great way to lessen the cost of trip preparation.
