Can You Wear a Tie When You’re Not Wearing a Suit?
I’ve seen this look with professors before, and am curious as to if this is an acceptable combination. The sport coat, with blue jeans (nothing crazy there), but the person will wear a tie as well. Is the tie with blue jeans acceptable or a style flub that should be avoided?

No style flub there. A tie can be a for-fun accessory rather than a business necessity. Ties with a colorful pattern are probably most common, since they’re casual like the rest of the outfit, but I’ve seen men achieve some good looks with nothing more than blue jeans, a good jacket, a white shirt, and a plain, monochrome tie in the right color. It mostly comes down to matching.
