thin watches
Hi guys,
I have been looking for a new watch.
My main irritations with my current watch is thats interfering with my sleeves.
Now i’ve seen thin watches (+- 5mm). After consulting some friends the opinion is 50/50. Some find it acceptable and others only for auctioneers and artist.
Question: What is your opinion?
Greetings,
Christian

Thin watches seem perfectly acceptable to me. In fact, they are quite classic, a trait that I seek for in my pursuit of style. The size of the actual clock is an important consideration: depending on the width of your wrist, you will have to find a size that suits you. Get that right, and you will have a nice classic timepiece that does not interfere with your shirt cuffs.
(which is indeed a terribly annoying thing, I just take my watch off whenever I wear a French cuff shirt)

LikeDislikeNothing wrong with a thin watch. You can get some that look pretty much like any other good dress watch — they don’t have to be ultra-modernist, futuristic-looking ones with flat digital readouts or anything.
Also worth keeping in mind, though, is to wear your watch to fittings if you have your shirts tailor-made or tailor-adjusted. It’ll give the tailor an idea of how much leeway he needs to give you for the wristwatch.

LikeDislikeI’m going to say no on the thin only because I know watches. Look at the classic designs and styles such as submariner. Any watch that is 5mm thin will most likely be an overpriced quartz movement. Your watch is not a tool it is a piece of functional jewelry. Its not meant to be hidden under your shirtsleeve. Small watches today are very dated and can be commonly mistaken for women watches. The classic masculine style watch is a sub. It’s the classic masculine round dial watch worn by presidents, Che Guevara, and the Dos Equis man. Now you don’t have to buy a Rolex, a number of other manufacturers offer swiss movements that create the sweeping motion of a Rolex second hand and that have a scratch proof sapphire crystal. Invicta will be the best bang for your buck for a classic sub at a fraction of the price of a Rolex. If you want an even more masculine classic watch, look at Panerai. A far less known style of watch that has its origins with the Italian military. Bill Clinton and a number of other celebrities sport this watch. The great part about it is that they are meant to be worn on a leather strap unlike a sub that favors a stainless steel oyster bracelet. The choice is yours but I would recommend a more masculine classic watch instead of a 70~80s era style watch.

LikeDislikeSlim dress watches are definitely on the way back in. Thanks to quartz they went out the window and all we had were great big gaudy Rolex sport watches. A simple, classic, slim dress watch oozes far more style and sophistication than a blingy dive watch that is resistant to 200m. Some classic examples of slim watches are the omega sea master, vacheron constatin, and if you can afford it: the patek philippe calatrava. There is a vacheron model that is only 4mm thick. That certainly ain’t messing with your cuff.
Buy a thin watch. Leave your sporty watches for what they were made for: sport. Don’t wear them with your suit!
If I had money to burn: patek philippe calatrava 5096
Enough said.

LikeDislikeHi Christian. I understand where you’re coming from, as I’ve had similar problems with my Bell 7 Ross – in fact I ended up getting some shirts made with one cuff slightly larger in diameter than the other, just to allow the watch to slide underneath !!
I found one way to get slim was to go vintage. I purchased a 1965 Rolex AirKing which is super subtle and glides under most cuffs. My wife has a Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso which is also very slim, yet VERY elegant.
I guess it just depends what you want your watch to say about you – I use the B&R primarily for “ruffty tuffty boys stuff” and the Rolex for “sophisticated, business type suit” stuff – the choice is yours I guess – good luck !
Stu.
