3 Replies to “Suspenders or Belt?”

  1. A belt serves the purpose of breaking up the vertical line that runs from your toes to the top of your head: it creates a horizontal line at which one’s eyes pauze for a moment. If you are very tall and slim like myself, this function of a belt will stop you from looking lanky. Thus, if you are heavier and shorter, suspenders are a great way of eliminating horizontal lines and ensuring a continuous line from top to bottom.
Suspenders are required wear for when you are wearing a three-piece suit or a tuxedo. Wearing a belt with either of these would be breaking the rules, although the vest of your 3P will likely cover the belt.

  2. I must disagree on the point of wearing a belt with a three piece suit. A lot of trousers aren’t made to with the buttons necessary for suspenders anymore ncluding three piece suit trousers.
On that note, if you want to wear suspenders and your trousers don’t have the proper buttons, have a tailor put them in. Alligator clip suspenders are a big no-no.

  3. Wow guys, I really appreciate. Thank you for clarifying this for me. And thank you to anyone in the future that might have anything to add!
