Can I Wear an Old Suit Jacket as a Sports Jacket?
I wore out a pair of trousers that came as part of a suit, but the jacket is still in good shape. I don’t think I’m going to be able to find a perfectly-matching fabric to get new pants made from. Can I just wear the jacket with other pants as a sport coat, or will that be really obvious and bad-looking?

Depends on the suit jacket. If it’s double-breasted, probably not. A single-breasted jacket can work on its own, but be careful with any three-button jackets that button up fairly high — sport jackets in general tend to button lower, and anything with a short opening is going to look odd paired with casual trousers.
The quality of the fabric also comes into play. Wearing a tweed jacket with khakis or even dark jeans is fine; wearing a superfine worsted in beautiful deep charcoal stands out as more of a mis-match.
So at the end of the day you’re going to have to check the look in the mirror and see if it looks like a relaxed guy in a sports jacket or a man who grabbed the wrong pair of pants for his suit. As a final caution, don’t wear the jacket of a suit significantly more often than the trousers — exposure and wear will slowly fade the dyes, and you don’t want to end up with “matched” trousers that are several shades darker than the jacket!
