Here is an article out lining the basics although I don’t agree with it 100% for all occasions. I think if you are wearing a lot of close matching leather you can try other colors of leather for a more casual look. If you are going out somewhere like on a date and you are younger. I think its ok to add a little contrast, you don’t want to look like you just left the office. Changing the color of your leathers can give a nice casual look while still looking sharp in a dark navy suit.
Black shoes are timeless classic, and would go with dark blue pants and are a little more dressier… at least traditional.
I like to go a little different route, and I wear a medium brown like a cognac color shoes with Dark blue, Different shades of Grey, and Brown slacks…. The trick I learned is wear a brown belt, or something that shows others that your decision of the shoes was intentional and not a fashion mishap. I personally like the look, it is non traditional but still classy.
I have very dark brown shoes (Brogues) S. Ferragamo that I love to wear with Dark Jeans… and it really steps up the look.
I like sticking with the classic rule of black shoes with Navy Blue pants. This way if you meet with a client/superior who likes to stick with the classic look too, then youre fine. If you meet with someone who likes to break fashion rules, then youre still fine. Youre “classic”. Even people who break fashion rules follow them eventually.
