  1. There’s a couple of questions in that one, so let’s take them one at a time:

When Can Seersucker Suits Be Worn? (Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc.)

The traditional rule that’s being asked about here is the idea that seersucker shouldn’t be worn before Memorial Day (the last Monday in May) or after Labor Day (the first Monday in September).

At this point the idea’s a little dated. Seersucker is a “summer” fabric, both for practical reasons (it’s very light and breathable) and because rules and formality relax somewhat in the summer. The two holidays were traditional brackets that gave you a comforting signpost for when you definitely weren’t making a faux pas by wearing seersucker.

That said, it’s getting hotter earlier and staying hot longer in a lot of the continental U. S. — and the rule’s totally meaningless in the rest of the world, which doesn’t have those holidays or marks them on other days. You’re better off using a bit of personal judgment. Once it’s been warm for a few weeks and it doesn’t look like it’s going to cool off again, break out the seersucker. Put it back in the closet when the days first start to feel nippy — don’t try to stretch the season out.

What to Wear with a Seersucker Suit?

The “white bucks” mentioned are casual dress shoes made of white buckskin (you can find companies selling white suede shoes as “bucks” as well, though this is inaccurate). They’re a traditional partner to a seersucker suit, particularly in the Southern U. S. Be aware that it is a bit of a “dandy” look — people will certainly notice!

Light brown or other casual dress shoes are also appropriate. Since it’s a classic (bordering on dated) style, treat it with a little respect and wear a collared shirt. A seersucker jacket over a T-shirt would just be odd. A necktie or bow tie during the day is fine, but never at night.

Belts vs. braces (suspenders) just depends on the trousers. If they have belt loops, wear a belt. If not, braces. Many will be made without, since braces are a traditional pairing (red braces with blue-and-white striped seersucker for the ultimate classic look — throw a straw boater hat on and it’s practically a historical costume).
