I don’t need suits most of the time but I do have the occasional job interview and wedding. What color of suit is the most basic and multi-purpose, black?

Black’s actually a little more limited and harder to match than some of your other options.
For the man who’s only going to own one suit I usually recommend a single-breasted, two-button suit in either charcoal gray or navy blue. Younger men usually do better in gray than blue, while older men can carry either one well.
Either option is easy to match, appropriate in all business and social settings where a suit is the proper attire, and the jacket and trousers can both be used as separate pieces for more casual outfits.
