Leather Jacket Advice
Hello, I’m 23 years old and I’m considering investing in a classic leather jacket. (One suitable for casual informal evening events, etcetera).
Firstly, is this a sensible idea? Perhaps I’m too young for one? I realize I might get bigger over the next couple of years so perhaps I should wait a while?
Secondly, what should I be looking for when buying one (with regards to fabric quality, fit, style, etcetera)?.
P.s. I am referring to buying a nice classic leather jacket – not a cheap fashion one which will look dated next month.
Thanks,
Liam

Leather jackets usually aren’t fitted close the way a suit jacket is, so if you buy one that’s comfortable but not tight you should have some room to grow. If you’re bulking up a lot lately and likely to continue, of course, you might wait until that’s run its course to go buy one.
A zipper front with a plain, turn-down collar in the same leather as the jacket is always safe and timeless. I’d stick to either black or brown, and base which one you pick on which color of shoes/belt you’re usually wearing in casual settings.
There’s a lot of good manufacturers out there, especially if you stick to smaller operations that produce both the leather and the finished goods. Those tend to be craftsmen who really know what they’re doing. Mine actually came from a tanner with a booth at the State Fair, and it’s held up great.

LikeDislikeI own a great leather jacket from USWings.com, they make WW2 aviator and bomber style jackets with turn-down collars and button down front pockets. You have to decide between the more expensive G-1 jacket with the fur on the collars or the cheaper A-2.
I bought my A-2 for $195 and I love it, its made from goatskin and its a great fit. You can get them in black or brown. They have a buffalo skin jacket for $600. Its an all around great company, most of their jackets are made in Ohio. They also make those Indiana Jones style jackets with the open sleeve versus elastic cuff which I have.
I don’t think you can find a quality bomber jacket for this price anywhere else. Most places they cost over $400.
