How Important is Color Coordination?
I recently purchased a custom charcoal gray suit and a navy blue blazer because I was told they are most versatile. However, after reading a color coordination book (Color for Men) I was told to buy earth-toned colors (brown, beige, rust etc.)
I am light haired and light skinned, but how important is color coordination when it comes to buying timeless pieces? Am I over-thinking color in my purchases? Are there colors that are safe for everyone like the suit and blazer I bought?

There are two issues here. The first is coordinating your wardrobe. The colours you wear should compliment one another but should not always match. The tie should compliment the shirt and the pocket square, but the tie and the pocket square should not be of the same fabric. Colour coordination comes with time. you have bought to of the basics. Your blazer will likely also match well the charcoal trousers.
The second issue is coordinating with you. Most colours will fit you well. Light coloured people should avoid pink; black and brown skin wear pin well. You will find clothes that compliment your hair and your eyes. When you do, you can say that is a good colour for you.
Find a good salesman at a clothing store and ask for help. If he is good, he will steer you away from bad choices.

LikeDislikeStick to light colors. Light blues, whites, yellows, etc. If you wore those earth tones with your suit, it would look a lot less formal. Charcoal gray suit with a white solid or striped shirt with some kid of navy blue tie is a timeless look.

LikeDislikeLike FK says above, earth-tone shirts like brown and beige are pretty casual. For business wear you want to stick to white, white with light patterning, and in some offices blue.
If you have light hair and light skin you want to go for things that have low contrast and transition easily from one garment to the next. So in formal business settings where you’re wearing the charcoal suit and a white shirt you want a dark, somber-colored tie that helps bridge the gap between white and dark gray, rather than a bold, bright color like red. Choices like that will help your wardrobe work with your complexion.
