How Do I Tell if a Scarf is Meant for Men or Women?
Guys are wearing scarves for style as well as warmth now, but sometimes I see guys wearing things that look really feminine. How can I tell if a scarf is supposed to be worn by men or women?

Realistically, most scarves are meant to be unisex — more profit out of the product that way for the manufacturer, and most people are looking for practical garments rather than fashionable ones when they go scarf shopping. But if you’re looking at more artistic or unusual options than your sort of standard solid-color or broadly-striped winter scarf, make sure you’re avoiding any really distinctly feminine accents:
- Beads, sequins, long lacy fringes, pom-poms, and those little metallic spangles that kind of look like macaroni art aren’t for guys. Stick to things made out of plain cloth. Some simple tassels at the end is as ornamented as your scarf should be.
- Also stay clear of anything that’s very shiny or satiny. A very colorful, shimmery scarf is going to make you look like you stole a belly-dancer’s costume. Not manly. There’s nothing wrong with a smooth silk scarf, just avoid reflective satin weaves.
- Don’t wear big, thick knitted scarves for style, and don’t wear thin silk scarves for warmth. If you’re wearing your scarf for warmth you should be taking it off whenever your coat comes off.
- Wear it with a jacket. Can be a sports jacket, a denim or leather jacket, a nice overcoat, whatever you want. Scarves and T-shirts should be left to girls and models in artsy photo spreads.
