getting more use out of my tuxedo
I own my own tuxedo but I don’t find much opportunity to wear it. It isn’t often that I am invited to a black tie event. I have already worn it enough to justify buying one as apposed to renting but as expensive as a tuxedo is, I want to get more use out of it. Can the suit be broken into separate trousers and jacket for occasions other than black tie or even worn in more creative ways as a full suit. ( I’ve already used my tux in a Halloween costume as phantom of the opera. ) Are there times when a tuxedo would be appropriate attire other than black tie events?

Not really.
The point of a tuxedo is for special occasions. If you wear the tuxedo outside of black tie events, I would think you would make those occasions seem a little more trivial.
Black tie is the height of most peoples’ formality, with only white tie being the next, and final step up, which most of us will never see. Because of this, it’s not something you’re going to be doing every Friday night.
If you want to find more places to wear it, it’s better to look for black tie events, like galas and fundraisers. The only issue is the cost of the tickets to attend these events might dissuade you, unless you’re making the bread. I’d say go to some concerts, but as a performer myself, I notice that while the performers are dressed in tuxedos, and the standard concertgoer usually wears a suit or blazer and grey flannel trousers.
The best way to show class with a tuxedo is to wear it in the way it was meant. Follow the classic black tie etiquette, and you can’t go wrong. Creativity on a tuxedo is more subtle, like a (tastefully) colored waist covering, a patterned bow tie, or something to that extent.
