Coordinating Colors
Hi! I’ve always had a hard time coordinating or complementing colors, I don’t think I’m color blind, maybe my problem is that I haven’t paid close attention to color families and all that stuff. My friend speaks of cold and hot colors, I’m like: “Huh?!” I know black and white are the easiest to coordinate, but even there you have to be careful. Any methods on how to get better at it? Thank You!

I used to have the same problem sir. What helped me personally was trial and error. But I dont want you to go through being made fun of for putting the wrong colors together. The best thing I think for you is to just look at some sports teams, they do a decent job, but also look up certain actors, that arent all flashy and such, and what they wore to an occasion. I think you will begin to pick up what colors go together and which ones dont soon enough. I hope this helps.

LikeDislikeIf you have Black, Navy, Grey (All Shades) pants and Black, Brown (Light, Dark and Red’s) you really cannot go wrong. Just make sure those socks match those pants and you will be fine. Use common sense with the shirt, but I would say 75% of your look is by matching the shoes, pants and socks. If you do decide to wear black pants and brown shoes, or oxblood then its a nice touch to wear a belt that matches the shoe.
White shoes I generally only wear with White or Khaki shorts and a loose polo to give it that casual summer feel. I personally do not like the two tone spectator look or a entirely white dress shoe. Its too in your face, and should only be used on occasions (Weddings if you plan on being a prince charming in all white)

LikeDislikeIf you are especially trying to match something like a tie to a dress shirt, it helps to know what colors will look good together. If you get a copy of the color wheel (it doesn’t have to be a real complex one), you then just need to learn about how colors relate to each other. Contrary to what some people may think, color coordination actually is a science (Sir Isaac Newton is actually the one who developed the color wheel), and there are certain color combinations that match for reasons other than “they just look good.” I’ll link you to a series of articles from the Real Men Real Style page that cover color coordination. Hopefully this will clear up some of the questions you have about color coordination.
