What about non-formalwear bow ties? Where and how to wear them? When are they inappropriate?

Theoretically, a non-formal (i.e., not black tie) bow tie fills the same function and role as a “normal” necktie. Anywhere it’s appropriate to wear the one, it’s appropriate to wear the other.
That said, it’s worth keeping in mind that the bow tie is going to seem more unusual to most modern men. A regular necktie might be more appropriate at functions where you’re not supposed to be drawing attention (support staff at a speech or a meeting, for example), or anywhere particularly somber or official (like a funeral or dedication service).
For normal day-to-day business bow ties can be worn in the same colors, patterns, and varieties as normal neckties. Don’t be shy about it!
