Can I Wear a Regular Black Necktie at a Black Tie Event?
I’m very tall and skinny, so bow ties look kind of silly under my face (lots of blank chest there). Can I wear a plain black necktie instead of a bow tie at formal events?
If it’s a “black tie optional” event you can wear a dark business suit with a white shirt and a black necktie. If it’s full black tie, however, you’ll want to do the proper ensemble, and that means a bowtie rather than a necktie.
You’ll see it at red carpet shows and in celebrity outfits and things, but those are guys that are trying to be different, edgy, whatever. Classic black tie is all about wearing a special outfit for a special event, and going that extra mile to get all the details perfect. Stick to a bow tie.
