Black suit, dark blue shirt and a tie?
Hey gentlemen!
I have a question for you. I recently bought a dark blue French cuff dress shirt which I really like. So my question is, when I wear a black suit and that same dark blue dress shirt, what kind of tie can I wear?
And I don’t mean only what color but also neck/bow.
I slightly prefer a bow tie but if that just doesn’t cut it I’m fine with a neck tie as well. One more thing is that I’m not going to wear it for work or anything like that. I’m young (15) and only wear a suit when I either play trumpet in a concert or go to theater etc.
Well I hope you understand what I mean and can answer it too!
Best wishes,
Jüri

Hello Jüri,
Personally i wouldn’t wear a black suit with a dark blue shirt cause the too colours are very close and there is no contrast between them. If I would want so much to wear that shirt i would go with a grey or light brown suit. About the tie, bow ties are more formal than neckties, but you can wear anything you feel more comfortable that day.
I wish i have helped a little:)

LikeDislikeThank you for the answer!
I could possibly wear another suit, it’s just that the black one fits me the best.

LikeDislikeThere are so many color options you can go with that will work with that suit and shirt combo that I’m not even going to try and list them. You can wear a bow or a long tie and it will look fine. You just have to be careful not to make it look like you are trying for a tuxedo look if you are wearing a bow tie. That shouldn’t be a problem with a blue shirt though.
Some tie color ideas would be black, red, red and blue pattern, pink, white, etc. For other options consult a color wheel.

LikeDislikeThank you so much for the answer!
But what do you mean by “trying for a tuxedo look”?
Is a black bow tie too much then?

LikeDislikeJust cautioning about wearing a black suit with a bow tie might be interpreted as trying to “make” a tuxedo. In the not too distant past, there would be no mistake because a tuxedo was a tuxedo and a black suit was a black suit and there was no mistaking the two. With everything else in fashion lately the lines between the two are being blurred and tuxedos are being made to look more like suits. You can now buy a tuxedo single breasted with notch lapels and no stripe down the outer seam of the trousers. There are still plenty of differences between a black suit and tuxedo that it’s noticeable but because the lines are blurred some people think that they can fake a tuxedo with a black suit much the way some people might try to make a suit by pairing a navy blazer with a pair of navy trousers. You don’t want to inadvertently come across as that person.

LikeDislikeThank you again!! I’ll just go with a nice red neck tie.

LikeDislikeMy take is don’t go for the dark blue shirt and black suit idea…mainly because often times it doesn’t present well to other people and what I mean by this is that some people may wonder if you realize that the shirt and suit are NOT the same colour…and will think you are either colour blind (not trying to be insensitive) or confused…neither of which I will assume you are
Not to mention the contrast is not good and its almost close to a black suit black shirt look…which is notoriously NOT a good look for almost all people.
